Job Description:

The CDC is seeking highly qualified candidates for a full-time Senior Service Fellow position as a Computer Scientist. The ideal candidate will have research experience and subject matter expertise in in computer science methods and techniques as it relates to public health informatics

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a senior advisor in the planning, organizing, and directing of public health informatics development efforts within DRH.
  • Apply innovative data science strategies for ongoing improvements to methods and algorithms that lead to findings.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports that include discussion of substantive issues related to data science methodology for public health surveillance and related applications.
  • Support the mentoring and professional development of students, fellows, junior staff and/or partners
  • Develop public health informatics research proposals and plan, formulate the requirements, and devise the research methods to accomplish the development, implementation, and evaluation of complex prototype systems.
  • Conduct critical computer analysis and in-depth investigations to identify the most feasible approaches to complex hardware/software/networking system design and development problems.
  • Develop usage and access control policies and systems in collaboration with the IT security experts to ensure that the information used follows the compliance, access management, and control policies and that it meets CIO qualification and assurance requirements.
  • Formulate and apply the foundations and concepts of computer science to address complex public health informatics data or management needs.
  • Provide leadership in designing, coordinating, and maintaining information technology (IT) project goals, objectives, and priorities within the Division.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Explore existing and emerging public health informatics technologies and determine not only their applicability to experimental development efforts, but to meet business needs as well.

Job Requirements:

  • One year of post-doctoral experience at or above the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.
  • Knowledge of CDC program goals and objectives and the relationship with other programs and key functions internal or external to the agency to define requirements, integrate program activities, assess impact, and/or make decision on use of resources
  • Knowledge of statistical methods, techniques, and methods in the collection, processing, analysis, dissemination, and storage/retrieval of data
  • Knowledge of team management techniques to plan, organize, and direct multi-disciplinary project teams and activities
  • Knowledge of both registration and survey data systems, data collection, integration, storage, access, analysis, and retention requirements based on the surveillance data collected that includes large structured and unstructured datasets
  • Doctoral degree.
